In 1996 she made her screen debut with a guest appearance on the American soap opera All My Children. Voice over work followed with the Nickelodeon cartoon series KaBlam!, as did her first major film role in 1997 was as the protagonist of Lawn Dogs, an acclaimed drama co-starring Sam Rockwell. Major box office pictures soon followed, including the romantic comedy Notting Hill and M. Night Shyamalan’s smash hit The Sixth Sense.

Barton is best known for her role as Marissa Cooper in the Fox television series The O.C., in which she starred from 2003–2006, and for which she received two Teen Choice Awards and a Prism Award nomination. The role catapulted Barton into mainstream fame, and Entertainment Weekly named her the ‘It Girl’ of 2003.

She has since appeared in the comedy remake St Trinian’s, the Richard Attenborough-directed drama Closing the Ring (both in 2007) and in Assassination of a High School President in 2008. Following, Barton returned to television, starring in the short-lived Ashton Kutcher-produced CW series The Beautiful Life: TBL in 2009, and in 2012 she returned to the stage, performing in the Irish production of Steel Magnolias.

After his schooling at Grady High, he studied drama at age 17 in London for two years at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, then returned to the States and continued his studies at the American Academy in New York. He made his NY stage debut in “Rebel Women” in 1976 at age 20 and appeared in regional productions, once playing the newspaper boy in a production of “A Streetcar Named Desire” starring Shirley Knight and Glenn Close.
